Born in 1926 near Whiteville, North Carolina, A. R. Ammons developed a deep connection to nature that would later shape his poetry. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Wake Forest University and began writing poetry while serving aboard a U.S. Navy destroyer during World War II.

Before joining Cornell University in 1964, Ammons led a diverse professional life. He attended graduate school at the University of California, Berkeley, worked as an elementary school principal in Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and took on roles as a real estate salesman, editor, and sales executive at his father-in-law’s glass company in New Jersey. His first collection of poetry was published in 1955, marking the beginning of a remarkable literary career.

Ammons’ poetry, spanning from concise visual impressions to expansive visionary works, earned him the 1973 National Book Award. The award citation praised him for extending the American poetic tradition of Emerson and Whitman into the present and future.

Roald Hoffmann, a Nobel laureate and fellow poet, described Ammons as a “natural philosopher,” highlighting his poetic search for interconnectedness in nature, aesthetics, and ethics. At Cornell’s 1998 “Ammonsfest,” a celebration of his life and work, Hoffmann remarked on Ammons’ ability to explore the philosophy of nature with both gentleness and determination.

Ammons is survived by his wife, Phyllis Ammons, his sister, Vida Cox, his son John Ammons and daughter-in-law Wendy Moscow, and his grandchildren, Matthew and Jasmine.
