Biography of Emily Dickinson
Emily Dickinson (1830–1886) was born in Amherst, Massachusetts, into a family known for its influence in education and politics. Her father, an orthodox Calvinist, was a lawyer, treasurer of Amherst College, and a Congressman. Her mother, also named Emily, was a devout but emotionally distant woman who struggled with depression, leading to a strained relationship with her daughter. Dickinson later remarked in a letter that she felt as though she “never had a mother.”
Dickinson received her education at Amherst Academy (1834–1847) and later attended Mount Holyoke Female Seminary (1847–1848). Around 1850, she began composing poetry, with her earliest known work, “Awake ye muses nine, sing me a strain divine…”, appearing in the Springfield Daily Republican in 1852.
Initially, Dickinson’s poetry followed traditional forms, but over time, she developed a unique and innovative style. Often written in hymn-like meter, her poems explored themes of death, faith, immortality, nature, domestic life, and the power of language. From 1858 onward, she meticulously compiled her poems into hand-stitched booklets, known as fascicles, preserving her work privately.
In 1862, she began a significant lifelong correspondence with Thomas Wentworth Higginson (1823–1911), a writer, reformer, and commander of the first regiment of African American soldiers during the Civil War. One of the four poems she sent him was the now-famous “Safe in their Alabaster Chambers.”
Despite her prolific writing, only a few of Dickinson’s poems were published during her lifetime, often heavily edited to fit conventional standards. It wasn’t until 1890, after her death, that a selection of her poetry was finally made public, revealing the depth and originality of her work.
Today, Dickinson is recognized as one of America’s most influential poets, celebrated for her unconventional punctuation, brevity, and profound exploration of human existence.
