Kya Hai Meri Bari Mein Kavita is an emotional poem by Harivansh Rai Bachchan. Here the word bari has been used. Bari has two meanings, one is Bari i.e. garden, and the other meaning is what is going to come next (Bari – Turn). Both these meanings have been expressed very well by Bachchan ji. Perhaps that is why Harivansh Rai Bachchan is above all the great poets of Chhayavaad.
In this post I will try to explain the meaning of the poem “Kya Hai Meri Bari Mein”. I hope you will like it.

Meaning of The Poem Kya Hai Meri Bari Me
These are the opening lines of the poem ‘Kya Hai Meri Baari’. Here, perhaps Harivansh Rai Bachchan is addressing his life to a Baari i.e. a garden. In this, the poet has expressed the condition of his life, perhaps he is observing his life. Here, the poet experiences the uncertainty of his life.
The garden, orchard or life which should have been watered with honey water, was watered with salty water. This means that the circumstances of life were not good, rather this life was spent fighting with bad circumstances. And in this life, which is spent fighting with the circumstances, nothing is achieved. Just like nothing grows in a flowerbed watered with salty water. Perhaps salty water is a symbol of tears.
That is, nothing good was achieved in this miserable life.
In these lines, the poet has clarified that there are tears and sorrow in his life, and with the water of this sorrow and tears, he sows the seeds in the garden of his life. That is, even in this life full of sorrow, he dreams, he has some hope. Creator – the one who creates the universe. The poet questions the creator of this universe that what is the meaning of giving hope and expectation in this life full of sorrow and tears.
The poet shows his helplessness. He is helpless that he cannot decorate the coming moments of his life without sorrow and tears. His coming moments also seem to be filled with sorrow and tears. What goal is God giving to his life in such helplessness of hope?
The poet wants to say that even if the honeymoon comes to Madhuvan. That is, even if some good moments come, what is my tomorrow? What is my future? Tomorrow will be the same as it is today. This life has passed in preparation to live.
As far as I feel, many people can see their lives in these lines. They work hard today to make tomorrow better and hope that they will be able to live comfortably tomorrow. But that tomorrow never comes. They are not able to live their present for the future. And the future that they imagine, does not come.
Kya Hai Meri Bari Me Poem Summary
In the poem ‘Kya Hai Meri Baari’, Harivansh Rai Bachchan is expressing a sense of despair towards life. He is referring to his life as a garden whose beds have been irrigated with salty water. Here, salty water is a symbol of sorrow and tears. A man surrounded by sorrow sees only sorrow and tears ahead in his life.
One can also imagine a better future. There is a sense of uncertainty about the future. And the future for which we work today, suffer today, and continue to suffer, but that future does not come. And this is the reason for despair.
