Rashmirathi Chapter 1 Part 4 | Drona’s fear and Kunti’s sorrow. This is the fourth part of my work on [ Rashmirathi Translated into English ]. For the convenience of reading, I have divided the chapters into parts. In the previous part: Rashmirathi 1st Canto Part 3 we saw the story of Karna and Duryodhana’s friendship.

In this part there is a fear in the mind of Guru Dronacharya, who wanted Arjuna to become the greatest archer, however Karna was going to challenge Arjuna as an archer. Due to the feats, he showed in the arena, a fear prevailed in the mind of Dronacharya.

Kunti, the mother of Karna, was another person in distress and sorrow as she never imagined that the child whom she had abandoned at birth would come to her as a rival to her other son.

शिष्य बनाऊँगा न कर्ण को, यह निश्चित है बात;

Rashmirathi Meaning and Explanation – First Canto Part 4

Rashmirathi poem by Ramdhari Singh Dinkar

When the show at the arena ended, all the citizens went towards their homes. They were discussing happily what they had witnessed today. Some were praising the qualities of Karna; some were praising the qualities of Arjun (Parth). All the citizens were going together, discussing the qualities of both of them. But Guru Dronacharya was walking with his favorite disciple Arjun, away from the crowd.

Dronacharya says to Arjun, O Parth! Which new Rahu has come again to challenge you in the form of Karna? I have always been focused on the fact that you should not have any rival in this world. There should be no one who can match your archery skills. No one should be able to compete with you in archery.

This is the reason why I did not even sigh once while asking for Eklavya’s thumb, and got his thumb cut off. [I have told the story of Eklavya in Rashmirathi Pratham Sarga Part 2]. Son! I always wish and try that there should be no thorn in your path. There should be no obstacle in your path. There should be no other archer like you.

Arjun was Dronacharya’s favorite disciple, Dronacharya did not want anyone to be equal to Arjun. But, when Karna challenged Arjun, a fear entered Dronacharya’s mind.

शिष्य बनाऊँगा न कर्ण को, यह निश्चित है बात;

Dronacharya further tells Arjun that whatever happened today and whatever we saw has shaken my patience and faith. I see the signs of an excellent warrior in Karna. His qualities are not those of ordinary warriors, but are the signs of extreme bravery. If this unruly boy continues to grow like this without stopping, then O Arjun! He can prove to be your death anytime. He can defeat you in a rivalry anytime.

I am thinking what to do with this Karna. This comet in the form of Karna, who is the fiercest among your enemies, how will I defeat his power?

I am thinking what solution I will take with this Karna. This comet in the form of Karna, which is currently the fiercest among your enemies, how will I defeat its brilliance?

Dronacharya tells Arjun to be careful, one thing is certain that I will not make this Karna my disciple, but son! You also be careful of this tough enemy.

On the other side was the group of Kauravas who were carrying Karna happily dancing and enjoying themselves. The Kauravas carried Karna while blowing conches. Karna’s face was radiant, it appeared as if it was a mountain of gold, well-built body and extremely divine. Karna and Duryodhana were walking with their arms around each other’s neck.

Ramdhari Singh Dinkar says, even the Sun was satisfied after seeing all that happened today. It was evening time, so the Sun was also on the way to setting and was cool. Karna was the son of the Sun, so the poet says, the Sun was also kissing the body parts of his son Karna with great love and with his soft hands.

Perhaps Ramdhari Singh Dinkar has called the light rays of the evening sun as “gentle”.

Today even the Sun was not feeling good about setting at the set time of the day. It seemed as if the Sun had stopped on the horizon for a moment out of love for its son. The Sun had forgotten its speed.

Dinkar ji has expressed Kunti’s sorrow in these lines. Kunti had abandoned Karna to avoid disgrace in the society because, at the time of Karna’s birth she was unmarried. But today Karna has come in front of everyone. And he came in front of everyone as a rival of his own brother. He came in front of everyone against his own clan.

Ramdhari Singh Dinkar writes, when the group of queens went back to the royal palace, a distraught woman (Kunti) was walking at the back of the crowd, saddened and gloating. It seemed as if her dreams had been shattered, as if she had lost a bet. Kunti, who was walking with a sad heart, felt as if her feet were not able to lift even when she tried to lift them.

In these words, the poet has given a wonderful portrayal of human emotions. He has shown the intention of the woman who has abandoned her son out of public shame. That same son has come in front of everyone today. That mother cannot even call her son her son. She cannot even hug her son. This is the sorrow of a mother. Along with this, when her son returned, he had feelings of hatred towards her other son. He became the rival of the other son. In such a situation, what must be going on in the heart of a mother, only that mother knows. Only Kunti knows Kunti’s sorrow.

Rashmirathi first canto part 4 summary

In this entire part, Ramdhari Singh Dinkar has shown the dilemma and fear of Dronacharya as well as the sorrow of Kunti. On one side is Dronacharya who does not want anyone to be equal to Arjun. He is looking for a way to reduce Karna’s strength. Karna should not compete with Arjun.

On the other hand, there is Kunti, who is in the maternal love when she comes across her abandoned son. But she cannot even call her son her son.

Duryodhan is happy to have a friend like Karna. Surya is also happy to see the prestige of his son.

But these lines reflect the sorrow of a mother who is helpless and powerless because of public shame.
