Mahamrityunjaya Mantra Meaning

AUM! (ॐ) – This is a universal sound and is recited before reciting any mantra. This is to awaken your body. The Vibration of AUM awakens your chakras and you become more receptive to the thought or action that you perform.

Trayambakam (त्र्यम्बकं) [त्रि = Three अम्बक = Eye]- The one who has 3 eyes. This refers to lord Shiva. The 3rd eye is the eye of wisdom, the power to look at the inner self.

It might also refer to the Tryambaka: the father, ambuka of the three deities, Brahma, Viṣṇu, and Rudra; ( I am researching this on my own. If any relevant idea is found, I will edit the post and notify) [Rig Veda 7.59.12]

Yajamahe (यजामहे): [यज् (Yaj) = To Worship, यजामहे (Yajaamahe) = We Worship] – We Worship the God with 3 eyes. or O! the 3-eyed God, We Worship you. The one who holds the highest position in all who should be worshipped. We bow to you.

Sugandhim (सुगन्धिं) – Sugandh in English means fragrance and sweet smell. However, in this mantra, the meaning is a healthy and clean body. A healthy and clean body is full of fragrance and the giver of this sugandh is the lord Shiva.

Pushti Vardhanam (पुष्टिवर्धनम् ) [पुष्टि  = Nourishment, वर्धन  = Increasing or Enhancing] – The one who gives us good health, and prosperity and nourishes our body and most importantly the soul. The force that nourishes the spirituality. The one who gives us a better life to live. This is for the God who gives us a quality life.

Urvarukmiva (उर्वारुकमिव) [ उर्वारु (Urvaaru) = Cucumber, इव (Iva) = in the same fashion]- This refers to the cucumber which gets separated from its vine as soon as it is ripe. No force needs to be applied.

Bandhanan (बन्धनान् ) [ बन्धनान् (Bandhanaan) = Bondages ] – Bandhan means bondage. Here it refers to the bondage of life and this world. The life is said to be a bondage and Shiva is the one who frees us from this bondage as the God of death.

Mrityurmukshiya (मृत्योर्मुक्षीय) [मृत्यु = Death, मुक्षीय = May I be Liberated] – When it is the time of my death, I must be liberated from all the bondings or sense of attachment to this world. In the way that a cucumber gets separated from its vine without a pain.

मामृतात् (Maa-Amrtaat) [मा = Not, अमृतात् = From Immortality] – In a way that I am not separated from the perception of Immortality. This means that I should have a perception of immortality and the death is only a journey to a new aspect of life.

Let us combine it and get the complete meaning of the mantra.

Aum! this is the fundamental sound of the universe and by reciting this you prepare your body to recieve the true sense of the mantra so that it reaches your inner-self. This is to activate your chakras.

O! the god with 3 eyes, we pray to you. You are the one who gives us a good and health life. You enhance the nourishment in our body and enhance the spirituality. In a way that a cucumber gets separated from its vine when it is ripe. There is no force applied to remove it from the bondage or attachment to the vine.

In similar fashion, I should get separated from this world and its attachments. I should have no attachment to this world of worldly matters when I am diying. Else these attachments will cause pain and will obstruct me from going to another world.

Do not seperate me from the sense of immortality. I should consider death as not the end of this life or my end, rather I should get a sense of immortality. This sense of immortality tells me that the death is just a change of the form and I will always remain.

~ Mahamrityunjaya Mantra Meaning

I know that this is the accurate meaning of the mantra. If anyone has to dispute, give me the meaning and prove it, where in this mantra, it says raise me from death?

Mahamrityunjaya mantra is dedicated to lord Shiva and he is the God of death. He has made the death as inevitable. So, the Mahamritynjaya mantra does not save you from death. However, it prepares for the death. It makes you strong and accept death as a passage to another world. So, you remain immortal. You are there in this world and you will remain there in another world. Hence, death is not something to be afraid of.

So, when you recite the Mahamritynjaya mantra with full consciousness, you imbibe the meaning that the world is a bondage, your life is a bondage, the relationships are a bondage, the money is a bondage and anything worldly is a bondage.

The most fearful thing in your life is the fear of death. Isn’t it? Thinking of anything else getting lost will not give you much fear. However, the fear of losing your life is ultimate. You can lose anything for your life. If your life is to be saved, you can pay any price that you can. True or not?

However, the Mahamrityunjaya mantra frees you from this fear. It tells you that anything materialistic in this world is bondage. So, O! God, do not keep me attached to worldly things as it would be tough for me to die and travel to another world. The death is not the end, I will always remain. So, there is nothing to fear.

By now, you must have realized that you have been fooled with a twisted meaning. Listen to this mantra on YouTube and in the intro, you can find it saying such things about the Mahamrityunjaya mantra.

However, the Mahamrutyunjaya Mantra is indeed miraculous and it helps overcome the fear of death. There is a difference between averting death and eradicating the fear of death. Let us see what is the meaning of the Mahamrityunjaya mantra in my view.

How to Recite Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra

To recite this mantra, your body and mind should be clean. Yes! you might think what I am saying. However, your mind and body should be clean. This is a part of Ashtanga Yoga. It is the 6th Limb of Ashtanga Yoga. Before you do a recitation, you need to follow the first 5 Limbs of Ashtanga Yoga.

A mind that is full of greed, a person that is a liar or is involved in illegal activities, should not perform this. You should be clean by body and soul. That is the reason this mantra is tough. If the mantra itself says that it is a liberation from worldly matters, an unhealthy brain with thoughts of all worldly matters will not be able to perform.

People charging you money for the recitation of the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra would never let you find this fact. Trust me, the truth is, you do not want to come out of the worldly matters. But the real pleasure is in spirituality.

Do not get me wrong here, there is a difference between fulfilling your duties and being attached to them.

While reciting the mantra the pronunciation should be correct. Because correct pronunciation gives you correct meaning. You should be focused. Many YouTube Channels will give you the mantra with added music, your mind is not on the mantra and its reals meaning, however, it is on the music. Recite slowly and purposefully.

Benefits of Mahamrityunjaya Mantra

Yes! there are benefits of Mahamrityunjaya Mantra. True benefits. It does not give you money, does not wake you up from dead or does not give you a lot of power to rule the world. However, it gives you the sense of liberation. A sense that tells you that the death is not the end. Death is just a journey of life.

Once you get this sense, you will not be afraid of death, is not a victory on death? Is it not the true meaning of Maha (Great) – Marityu (Death) – Jaya (Victory) – The great mantra to win over the death.
