Swami Vivekananda was born on 12th January, 1863. His childhood name was Narendranath Dutta. Vivekananda was raised in a middle-class Bengali family, which gave him a solid basis for achieving his spiritual goals. Since childhood he had a great liking for spirituality. He had many questions related to spirituality and existence of God. He had a curious mind. We will read later as how his questions were answered by his teacher Ramakrishna Paramhansa.

Swami Vivekananda was good at learning and was a bright student. His knowledge and guidance by Ramakrishna Paramhansa made him a spiritual leader. He is respected in India and all over the world for his teachings and social reforms.

Vivekananda wanted to learn spirituality from a young age. He had questions about spirituality and God, and he could not find answers. He met many teachers to get the answers, however, no one was able to answer his questions on existence of God.  He met Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa and his life changed. Ramakrishna Paramhansa was a great saint. Vivekananda found the true meaning of spirituality. He learnt the philosophy of self-realization under Sri Ramakrishna’s guidance.

Ramakrishna was a disciple of Goddess Kali and he made Vivekananda realize the presence of God and made him experience on his own.

Teachings of Swami Vivekananda contains a high-level philosophy and everywhere it puts an emphasis on the concept that God exists inside every creature. Be it humans or any other living being. His philosophy and vision encourage people to follow the path of universal ideals like love, compassion, and togetherness.

He guided the world with his spiritual knowledge. At the same time, he worked towards changing the Indian society to become better. Vivekananda’s Early Life and Spiritual Quest

At a very young age Swami Vivekananda became interested in different religious and their philosophy. He read books related to Hinduism and other religions. For the search of knowledge, he read books by philosopher from different countries. When he was not satisfied, he learned and experienced different religious practices as well. He was searching for knowledge and wisdom continuously and later he met his teacher Ramakrishna Paramhansa who changed his life.

When Vivekananda first met his spiritual teacher Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa, in 1881, it marked a turning point in his life. Vivekananda found a great source of inspiration in Sri Ramakrishna. Vivekananda’s spiritual growth began by the greatly awakened saint Sri Ramakrishna.

Being Ramakrishna’s student for a long time, he gained the knowledge and insights of his respected teacher. Vivekananda had deep spiritual experiences and gained an in-depth understanding of both the nature of the divine and human beings during this time.

Ramakrishna Paramhansa died in 1886. This was an important time in Vivekananda’s life. He started to spread his teacher’s knowledge with a view to awaken the entire world. At this point Vivekananda’s goal of life became clear and it was “to help people see the divine God within themselves and inspire them to reach their full potential”.

Vivekananda travelled alone across India, encountering himself the country’s many religious and cultural traditions. He saw personally the destruction that poverty, inequality, and religious clashes caused on Indian society. He made a commitment to solve these problems and with this he brought an enormous change.

In the year 1893 Vivekananda went to Chicago to attend the World’s Parliament of Religions. He addressed the parliament with powerful and confident words “Sisters and brothers of America”. This well-known phrase made him popular all around the world. He became popular with his speech at the conference. People liked and admired his deep knowledge and acceptance of all people and religion.

Vivekananda went to different parts of United States and many European countries. People respected him for his knowledge. He taught and spoke about Vedanta and Hindu Philosophy. He participated in many religious conferences and delivered many lectures. He participated in discussions to fill the gap between religions.

While Swami Vivekananda worked on his own personal enlightenment, he also focused on a view and larger goal of social advancements.
