The Greedy Landlord and the Old Woman’s Wisdom

Story:

In a quiet village, there lived a shrewd and deceitful landlord who owned vast stretches of land. He was known for his cunning ways, often preying on the poor and uneducated. Whenever someone in need approached him for financial help, he would offer small loans but with an undisclosed trap—high interest rates that kept accumulating. Eventually, when the borrowers failed to repay, he would seize their land, expanding his empire at the cost of their misery.

One day, the landlord set his sights on a small plot owned by an elderly woman who lived alone. She had inherited the land from her ancestors and relied on it for survival, growing crops to sustain herself. Unlike the others, she had never borrowed money from him, making it difficult for him to take possession of her land through his usual schemes.

Determined to acquire her property, he resorted to corruption. He bribed a government official to forge ownership documents in his name. With fake papers in hand, he marched to the old woman’s home alongside the official and handed her a notice demanding that she vacate the land immediately.

The old woman was heartbroken. She had lived there her entire life—her childhood memories, her family’s legacy, and even the resting places of her loved ones were all tied to that soil. She pleaded with the landlord, explaining that the land was rightfully hers, but he remained unmoved. Seeking justice, she took the matter to the local court, only to find that corruption had spread there as well. The landlord’s influence ran deep, and with the fraudulent documents in his favor, the court ruled against her.

Left with no choice, she began packing her few belongings, tears streaming down her face. As she prepared to leave, the landlord and his associates stood nearby, watching her distress with satisfaction. But before stepping away, she turned to him and spoke in a trembling voice.

“Sir, you have taken everything from me today,” she said, her voice filled with sorrow. “This land is where I laughed as a child, where I toiled as a woman, and where my loved ones rest. But I will leave as you wish. However, before I go, I have one small request. May I take a basket of soil with me? This land is dear to me, and keeping a little of its soil will bring me comfort in my final days.”

The landlord, feeling victorious, chuckled. He saw no harm in granting her request. “Take it,” he said smugly. “A basket of soil won’t change anything.”

The old woman began filling her basket, packing the soil tightly until it was overflowing. She then tried to lift it onto her head but struggled under its weight. Turning to the landlord, she humbly asked, “Sir, would you be kind enough to help me lift this onto my head?”

He stepped forward, but as he lifted the basket, he scoffed. “Old woman, you’ve filled this basket beyond your strength! If you can barely carry a small portion of this land, how did you think you would take it with you?”

With tears in her eyes, she looked at him and replied, “You are right, sir. I have spent my whole life on this land, yet I cannot carry even a basket of soil with me when I leave. I will not be able to take it with me when I die, either. But tell me, sir—if I, who have loved and nurtured this land, cannot take even a handful of it, then how will you take all the land you have stolen when your time comes?”

The landlord was stunned. Her words pierced through his greed like an arrow. For the first time, he saw the emptiness of his actions. He had spent his life accumulating wealth, but what good was it if he could not take it beyond this world? Overcome with guilt, he fell to his knees before the old woman, begging for forgiveness.

With newfound wisdom, he tore up the forged documents and returned her land. “This land belongs to you,” he said. “Live here in peace.”

The old woman, with kindness in her heart, forgave him. And from that day forward, the landlord changed his ways, using his wealth to help the people instead of exploiting them.

Moral of the Story: The Greedy Landlord

Greed leads to emptiness, while contentment brings peace. Wealth and power are temporary, but kindness and integrity leave a lasting legacy. Take only what you need, for in the end, we all leave this world with nothing but the deeds we have done.
