Buddha Jataka

Buddha Jataka stories recount the Bodhisatta’s previous lives as he perfected the virtues necessary for enlightenment. These 547 ancient birth-tales, preserved in the Pali Canon, feature the future Buddha in various roles—a compassionate king, a wise teacher, a self-sacrificing animal, or a devoted ascetic. Each narrative illustrates a specific virtue—generosity, patience, truthfulness, or loving-kindness—essential for awakening. These stories were carved into the ancient stupas of Bharhut and Sanchi, inspiring Buddhist art and ethical teaching across Asia. Today, they remain beloved for their timeless moral wisdom and engaging storytelling.
